Sandia Ranch Sanatorium is one of Albuquerque’s local urban legends. An old abandoned insane asylum which was known for performing lobotomies and using electro-shock therapy is reported to be haunted. Several rumors exist including those of murder in addition to how the staff would store the bodies of the “batched” lobotomies in the crawl space in the boiler room. (more…)

Sandia Ranch Sanatorium: An abandoned, haunted insane asylum

Sandia Ranch was a privately owned insane asylum which was originally built in the early 1900’s as a Tuberculosis Ward.  When the need for the TB wards died, it was then converted into a sanatorium.  There are many rumors about this place… botched lobotomies and storing the bodies in the boiler room, as well as a resident who murdered one of the doctors, then several nurses are a couple I have found.  I am not a ghost-hunter, but I am drawn to old, abandoned places. Abandoned schoolhouse in Indiana

When visiting my family back in Indiana over Christmas 2010, I stopped to take photos of an abandoned Jefferson Township School near Shannondale, Indiana.  I grew up driving by this school for many, many years.  My last visit to my hometown was in 2000 to bury my father.  I had never really acknowledged it’s existence until this last trip home.  It was cold, snowy, and very surreal.  The visions and voices of the children in decades past echoed through my mind as I tromped through the snow, fingers numb as I refuse to put on gloves when taking pictures or taking film.
